Giovanni Battista and Santa Maria Paris Church – Vicopisano

Giovanni Battista and Santa Maria Paris Church is the only used church in the village of Vicopisano. It was built on XII century.

The monumental structure has 3 naves, and outside it has ‘pietra verrucana’ vestments (1914-1925).

On the higher part there is a sloping double-arched window, and it is decorated by elevated small arches. The bell tower was built in 1775.

A low relief (inside the facade) rapresents the ‘Decollazione of San Giovanni Battista’. The 3 inner naves are divided by columns with Roman capitals.

Frescos:

On the right: ‘Annunciazione’, ‘Visitazione’, ‘Natività’ and Erode orders the ‘strage degli innocenti’

On the low relief (on the right, in the low) : ‘San Giorgio and the dragon’ on the top: ‘ll Battesimo di Cristo’

On the left wall: on the top: ‘Cattura del Cristo’  and at the bottom: ‘Pentecoste’

The cycle was supposed to use for background at the precious wood groups of seven pictures of ‘Deposizione della Croce’. There is inserted on the left wall since XVII century. A fifteenth-century tabernacle made by a rock come from a close oratorical oratorio together a big wood simulacrum.

The statue was do for the San Felice church (in Pisa), where it stayed unused.

rivalto excursion escursione

Giro di Rivalto Excursion

The excursion is characterized by various types of environments; we pass from a wooded environment, we pass from a typical Tuscan countryside, It’s characterized by hills alternated by watercourses.

During the excursion we can find a typical Tuscan farms, They are sometimes accompanied by the characteristic double to spin of cypresses.

You have to leave the car in the car park of the agritourism “Le Valli”, a cross will guide us to the path.

 

Attention: Since It is not possible to know the number of participants of the longer path, If the group will be numerous,the group could arrive late, in that case who was waiting the group, he/she can visit Rivalto.

Museum of Giorgio Kienerk

The museum dedicated to Giorgio Kienerk has been achieved to collect all the artwork of the painter.

Giorgio Kienerk, with his wife and his daughter, they have spent all the summer vacations there from 1919 to his death in his family’s mansion.

The museum of Giorgio Kienerk is placed in the historical jails of Fauglia.

In the 1800s a building of Uffizi Pubblici was built by Arturo Conti. The new municipal complex housed the jails, the policemen’s barracks and the magistrate’s court.

Castello dei Vicari in Lari

Castello dei Vicari in Lari rises on the top of the higher place of the village. The castle has become centre of the vicariato of Florence.

Inside there are numerous paintings and decorations. The large rooms houses Vicari until 1848. The castle has becomed then Palazzo Pretorio until 1962. Nowadays it has been restored and it houses a museum about vicariato’s history with documents and maps.

The Zoological museum in Capannoli is located in the ground floor of Villa Baciocchi. The museum is composed of five rooms, it exposes taxidermied animals: invertebrates, birds, reptiles and fishes from all over the world.

The museum exposes over 1400 exemplaries of fauna.

Some rooms proposes environmental reconstructions with dioramas, it exposes tigers, bears and lions.

Museo Archeologico della Valdera in Capannoli

The museum is located in Villa Baciocchi in Capannoli and it is composed of five rooms which propose a guided archaeological tour about Valdera’s history and revolution:
1- Prehistory in Valdera;
2-Etruscan in Valdera: settlement;
3- Etruscan in Valdera: necropolis;
4- Roman Valdera;
5- Middle Age in Valdera.

The museum collects archaeological material from excavations in Valdera. The exposition is enriched from a series dioramas of some settlement types.

Museum of the Work and rural civilization in San Gervasio

Museum of the Work and rural civilization in San Gervasio is located inside a 1600 restructured house. It houses hundreds of objects like tools, utensils, and agricolture machinery used by Tuscan farmersin the last two centuries.

There is also a big library and its documentation centre, available on application, collects papers  from 1800.

Outside there is an ancient windmill and some thresher from the last century.

The museum offers an interesting guided tour with a lot of labooratories for children and students.

Museum of Civiltà Contadina in Montefoscoli

In basements and tunnels there is the Museum of Peasants Culture. The agricultural activity into the properties of Vaccà-Bellinghieri’s family has given the possibility to collect large quantities of utensils which date back to the 16th century.

In the cellar, the mill or other places you can relive the emotions of a simple life, in touch with nature. This is a commemorational museum through material testimoniances of daily objects.

With booking there are guided tours for child and students.
